About James

James Adams — Founder of Pickleball Cove

James Adams is the founder of Pickleball Cove, an entrepreneur, product builder, and investor based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Like a lot of people, James didn't ease into pickleball gradually. He played, got hooked, and immediately wanted to play more.

What stood out almost as quickly as the game itself was how difficult it could be to actually get on a court.

Gym time was limited. Community courts were busy. Players rotated on and off. Bookings filled up quickly. A great game could be cut short because another group had the space next.

James kept coming back to a simple question:

What if playing pickleball could feel easier?

Not bigger. Not more complicated. Just better.

That idea became Pickleball Cove.

Why Pickleball Cove Exists

A better space, built around the player.

Pickleball Cove was designed around the experience James wanted as a player: a great court, a great space, and the ability to play without everything around the game getting in the way.

Instead of building a large traditional sports complex, James took a different approach.

One private court.
One booking.
The entire space is yours.

There are no strangers rotating into your game, no players waiting on the sideline for their turn, and no need to organize your schedule around a gymnasium or recreation centre.

Located in a quiet business park just off Highway 101 in Nova Scotia, Pickleball Cove was intentionally built to feel different from a typical community gym.

The court uses a premium cushioned VersaCourt playing surface rather than painted concrete. The space is private, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. Access is automated so players can arrive using their booking code without needing the facility to operate around traditional staffing hours.

Even the murals and visual identity were intentional.

James believes the places we spend our time should have personality.

Pickleball Cove is a sports facility, but it is also meant to be a place people genuinely enjoy being in.

Built by a Player

Every decision starts with the player.

For James, Pickleball Cove is ultimately a product built around the player.

Every decision starts with a simple question:

Does this make playing pickleball better?

That means keeping booking simple.

Making the facility easy to access.

Investing in the quality of the court.

Giving players privacy.

Creating an environment that feels polished without becoming intimidating.

And, most importantly, letting people focus on playing.

Pickleball Cove opened as Nova Scotia's first private pickleball facility of its kind and remains deliberately small.

That is part of what makes it special.

The goal was never to put as many courts as possible under one roof. The goal was to create one really good one.

An Entrepreneurial Approach to Recreation

A career built around making things simpler.

Pickleball Cove also reflects the way James approaches entrepreneurship more broadly.

His career has been built around finding experiences or workflows that could be better and then creating something simpler around them.

Before Pickleball Cove, James founded Visual Media Church, a subscription-based digital media company serving churches and organizations internationally. The company grew from a creative idea into a recurring-revenue digital business and was later acquired by Renewed Vision, the technology company behind ProPresenter.

James has continued working with Renewed Vision while also building, investing in, and advising new businesses and software products.

His experience spans technology, SaaS, digital media, artificial intelligence, product development, hospitality, recreation, real estate, and startup development.

Through his work with Build Labs, James also explores and develops new software businesses, particularly products that use technology and artificial intelligence to simplify outdated or unnecessarily complicated experiences.

Pickleball Cove applies much of that same thinking to recreation.

Take something people already love.

Remove friction.

Improve the experience.

Make it easier to use.

Give it a strong identity.

And keep the product simple.

Building Things People Want to Use

A builder, first and foremost.

James describes himself first and foremost as a builder.

Sometimes that means software.

Sometimes it means a company.

Sometimes it means a physical space like Pickleball Cove.

The common thread is an interest in creating useful things and making existing experiences better.

His entrepreneurial experience includes starting businesses, developing products, creating brands, building recurring-revenue models, investing in companies, serving on boards, and taking a business through acquisition.

James has also served in board and governance leadership positions, including experience as a board member and board chair with larger organizations and within the charitable sector.

But Pickleball Cove is intentionally much simpler than all of that.

It exists because James loves playing pickleball and wanted a better place to play it.

Local by Design

A local place built for local players.

James is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and has spent much of his career building businesses from Atlantic Canada that serve customers locally, nationally, and internationally.

Pickleball Cove is different because it is deliberately rooted here.

It is a local place built for local players.

Friends playing after work.

Couples learning together.

Families booking a court.

Competitive players getting extra practice.

Someone trying pickleball for the first time.

Or a group that simply wants an uninterrupted hour to play.

There doesn't need to be much more to it than that.

Book the court.
Bring some friends.
Pick up a paddle.
And play.

That was the idea behind Pickleball Cove from the beginning.

And it still is.
